Storm Damage Roof Inspection & Insurance Restoration
A storm damage roof inspection is the first step after hail or high wind in Dallas-Fort Worth, and it should cost you nothing. North Texas sits in one of the most hail-prone regions in the United States. After a storm, the useful sequence is simple: document what happened, get an honest inspection, understand your policy, and only then decide whether to file a claim. What you should not do is sign anything with someone who knocked on your door an hour after the hail stopped.
- Free inspection with photo documentation you keep
- Straight answer on whether damage is likely claimable
- No deductible games, no contingency-contract pressure
- Solar arrays inspected alongside the roof
What to do after a hailstorm
-
1. Note the date and the storm
Carriers work from a date of loss. Write it down while it is fresh.
-
2. Photograph from the ground
Gutters, downspouts, window screens, AC fins, fence caps, mailbox and any dents on soft metal. These corroborate roof damage.
-
3. Check inside
Look for ceiling stains and, if you can do it safely, check the attic for daylight or damp decking.
-
4. Get an inspection
A roof can be functionally damaged with nothing visible from the ground. Bruised shingles usually cannot be seen from the driveway.
-
5. Read your policy before filing
Know your deductible, whether you have ACV or RCV coverage, and whether a separate wind and hail deductible applies.
-
6. Then decide
If the likely damage is less than your deductible, filing may not serve you. We will tell you when that is the case.
Hail damage vs. normal roof wear
| Hail damage | Normal wear |
|---|---|
| Random circular bruises with granule loss and a soft, bruised feel | Uniform granule loss across the whole slope |
| Fresh, exposed black substrate at impact points | Evenly faded, dull surface |
| Matching dents on gutters, vents, AC fins and soft metals | No collateral damage on metals |
| Damage concentrated on the storm-facing slopes | Worst on south and west slopes from sun exposure |
| Sudden appearance after a known storm date | Gradual decline over years |
How Texas roofing claims generally work
- You report the loss to your carrier and receive a claim number
- An adjuster inspects and writes a scope and estimate
- If the claim is approved, an initial payment is issued, usually less your deductible and less depreciation on an RCV policy
- The work is completed to the agreed scope
- On an RCV policy, recoverable depreciation is released after completion and documentation is submitted
- Additional damage found during the work is submitted as a supplement
Storm-chaser behavior worth walking away from
- Pressure to sign a contingency agreement on the first visit
- Any offer to waive, absorb, rebate or "work around" your deductible
- Claims that they can guarantee your claim will be approved
- Out-of-state plates, no local address, and no permanent phone number
- Refusal to give you the inspection photos unless you sign

Frequently asked questions
- How do I know if my roof has hail damage?
- Most functional hail damage is not visible from the ground. The reliable signals are collateral dents on gutters, downspouts, vents, AC fins and screens, plus bruised shingles that feel soft and show fresh black substrate. A close-up inspection is the only way to be confident.
- How long do I have to file a hail claim in Texas?
- Policies contain notice requirements and Texas law sets outside limits, but practically, sooner is better. Delay makes it harder to tie damage to a specific storm and gives carriers a reason to question causation. Check your specific policy language.
- Will filing a claim raise my rates?
- That depends on your carrier, your claim history and the type of loss. Weather claims are typically treated differently from liability claims, but we cannot promise how your carrier will respond. Ask your agent directly before filing.
- Do you do free storm inspections?
- Yes, and you keep the documentation regardless of whether you hire us. If we do not find enough damage to justify a claim, we will tell you that.
