Class 4 Impact-Resistant Shingles

Class 4 is the highest impact rating under UL 2218, awarded to shingles that survive a two-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet without cracking the mat. In a hail corridor like DFW, they meaningfully reduce the chance that a moderate hailstorm ends your roof, and many Texas insurers offer a premium discount for installing them.

What the rating actually means

UL 2218 measures resistance to cracking of the shingle mat, not immunity to hail. A Class 4 shingle can still lose granules, and severe hail can still total a Class 4 roof. What changes is the threshold. In the one to one-and-a-half inch hail events that hit parts of DFW most springs, a Class 4 roof frequently survives where a standard architectural shingle would be bruised across multiple slopes.

Are they worth it?

Consider Class 4 if Standard architectural may be fine if
You have filed more than one hail claim on this homeThe home has not been hit in the last decade
You plan to stay 10+ yearsYou expect to sell within a few years
Your insurer offers a documented IR discountYour carrier offers no discount
Your deductible is high enough that small claims are not worth filingYou carry a low, flat deductible

The honest math: the upgrade typically adds a meaningful amount to the project. It pays off through avoided deductibles and premium discounts over time, not immediately. Ask your agent for the discount amount in writing before you decide, and we will price both systems so you can compare real numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Do Class 4 shingles lower my insurance premium in Texas?
Many Texas carriers offer an impact-resistant roof discount, but the amount varies widely by carrier and policy. Ask your agent for the specific discount on your policy before you make the decision, and get it in writing.
Can Class 4 shingles still be damaged by hail?
Yes. They are impact-resistant, not hail-proof. Large or wind-driven hail can still cause functional damage that supports a claim. The rating raises the threshold; it does not eliminate risk.
Do Class 4 shingles look different?
Most modern Class 4 products are architectural shingles with a modified mat or a polymer-modified asphalt, and look essentially identical to their standard counterparts from the ground.
Will insurance pay to upgrade my roof to Class 4 after a claim?
Generally no. A claim settlement pays to restore what was there, subject to your policy. Upgrading to Class 4 is usually an out-of-pocket difference, which we will show as a separate line so you can see exactly what the upgrade costs.
