How Attic Ventilation Affects Your Roof
Attic ventilation removes heat and moisture from beneath the roof deck. When it is unbalanced or blocked, attic temperatures climb, shingles age from underneath, and moisture condenses on the deck in winter. It is the most common cause of premature shingle failure we find in North Texas, and most manufacturer warranties require it.
Intake and exhaust have to be balanced
Ventilation is a system: air enters low at the soffits and leaves high at the ridge. Adding more exhaust without matching intake does not help and can actively hurt, because the system will pull make-up air from the easiest available source, which is often your conditioned living space or an adjacent vent.
The most common problems we find

Blocked soffit vents
Insulation pushed into the eaves during an attic upgrade is the number one cause. The vents exist and do nothing.

Mixed exhaust types
Ridge vent plus powered fans plus turbines on the same attic can short-circuit airflow instead of moving it through.

Painted-over soffit vents
Common on older homes after exterior repaints.

Bath fans venting into the attic
Dumping humid air under the deck, which causes decking damage and mold.

Insufficient net free area
Total vent area undersized for the attic footprint.
