Are Class 4 Shingles Worth It in Texas?
Class 4 shingles are usually worth it if you plan to stay in the home ten or more years, your neighborhood has been hit by hail more than once, and your insurer offers a documented impact-resistant discount. They are harder to justify if you expect to sell soon or your carrier offers no discount.
What you are actually buying
UL 2218 Class 4 means the shingle survived a two-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet without cracking the mat. It is a threshold, not immunity. What it buys you in practice is a meaningfully better chance of surviving the one to one-and-a-half inch hail that hits parts of DFW most springs without needing a claim.
Running the numbers honestly
- Add the upgrade cost from your contractor's line-item proposal
- Subtract the annual insurance discount, in writing from your agent, multiplied by the years you expect to stay
- Subtract the deductible you would likely avoid paying on at least one claim over that period
- Consider the non-financial value of not living through a roof replacement every several years
For a homeowner staying 15 years in Collin or Denton County, this math usually favors Class 4. For someone selling in three years, it usually does not, because you cannot recover the premium at sale.
